Item upgrades are a common and crucial method to enhance the performance of numerous items in Path of Exile. They can be a good source of extra damage and more AD or even more attaches.

Rare-grade equipment can be superior to upgraded Common or Magic equipment because of their high requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a form of upgrade that can be used on armor and weapon items. They increase the stats of whatever item they are connected to. Armor upgrades can be found in the world of the game and purchased from Blacksmiths on bonfires. Alternately, they can be salvaged from items with upgrade components within them by using an expert or greater salvage kit.

The amount of damage an armored item or weapon is able to absorb is dependent on the degree of upgrades. Upgrading a piece of armor to its highest upgrade level will boost its damage absorption. However, it's important note that this will also increase its weight, causing it to weigh more than it was before.

There are several different types of armor upgrades available in the game. Each has a different impact. For instance, some upgrades will grant the armor a certain amount of health points while others make it stronger and lighter. The name of the upgrade will indicate the kind of upgrade the item upgrade can receive, as shown below.

Some of the upgrades also require magic or a combination of technology and magic, as identified by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table below. Some upgrades also require charges for use. Unlike other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped out with a jewel of the same kind without damaging it. You can only replace the jewel once in an item upgrading of equipment.

It is typical to use more jewels to enhance the appearance of. Apart from improving performance, the diamonds create an outer layer that is more durable than steel, so the repeated friction from pivots doesn't cause damage as easily.

The first trinket players can unlock is the cloak. It grants a small but beneficial boost in movement speed and the ability to evade. The player can then collect rings, amulets and necklaces in a similar fashion similar to how they obtained weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment comes with a slot for an upgrade that can be either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades are smaller and are able to be used on any piece of equipment. Jewels cannot be upgraded or replaced and are only compatible with certain trinkets.

These trinkets can provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't in combat. This enables the hero to perform better when they are not active, and can also help fill in the void of a strong team or the absence of any talent tree slots that would normally be filled with hero's ideal statistics.

As a general rule trinket upgrades should be prioritized over BiS (Best in Slot) items that you will not replace in the near future. Next, any items with desirable statistics that aren't as important as the iLevel of the item to be upgraded. This is especially true if an item has multiple stats that you wish to upgrade, since it's generally better to upgrade a single crucial stat than two subpar ones.
