Before the formation of Toto the group, members worked as sessions for other musicians. Toto was formed in 1976 in the wake of the collaboration.

The third album of Toto, Turn Back, marked an abrupt departure from the progressive sound of their previous albums, and was criticised for the lack of hit singles. In 1985, the group's lead singer Fergie Fredericksen resigned, and the band held auditions to find a replacement frontman. Guitarist Steve Lukather was chosen, and the group recorded their album Fahrenheit in 1986.

Toto released Toto XX in 1998 to mark its 20th anniversary. The band went through old tapes and recordings to create the unique record. The album was well-received by fans and the band embarked upon the tour with former members Bobby Kimball Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.

During the tour for the album 40 Trips Around the Sun, drummer Leland Sklar left the group and was replaced by Shem von Schroeck. In 2017, Toto released a double-CD live album titled Falling in Between, 먹튀검증 커뮤니티 which included live recordings from the tour as well as an interview with the group.
