Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet format of the previous albums. It was a more ferocious, constant effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. Its more punk-rock sound was indicative of the maturation of group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's increased ability on the drums and a more mature, confident vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard playing was also sharper, more complex, and less derivative on previous efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a new studio album a few months after, and went on a tour around the world to support it. During this period keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
