French-door fridges combine design and function. They come with stylish double doors that show an enormous fridge on top, and a freezer drawer below. Special features like door-to-door dispensers, high-end ice machines, and customizable flex drawers make them stand out from the crowd.

We contacted Ladina Schopf - an interior designer, architect and the founder of LS Projects - for her advice on how to choose the best one. We looked at storage capacity, layout and energy efficiency among other aspects.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The name implies that GE's Profile series is targeted at the consumer who wants to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into their kitchen. This fridge is loaded with them all from the Keurig K cup coffee maker on the door, to a clever dispenser of water. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. This refrigerator is costly and I expected more.

This fridge is a good choice, despite the blip. It comes with a huge freezer compartment, which is uncommon in counter-depth french style fridge freezer with ice dispenser door fridge non plumbed (company website) door fridges, and it holds a good amount of frozen food as compared to similar models.

The fridge comes with 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment is 18.5 cubic feet of space, which is on par for an French door fridge costing this much. It has a decent-sized freezer in the left side. But, it's not the largest one I've seen.

You can alter the shelves in both compartments to make the perfect storage solution. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is also attractive. Its LED lighting is a nice touch and the storage bins come with a third shelf that folds up beneath itself to make it possible to store large items. The drawers have temperature controls that let you set them to Meat, Beverage or Deli settings. The drawers are easy to open and shut, but I found the textured plastic coatings a bit hard on my fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator includes all the features you'd expect from a refrigerator in this price range. It has Wi-Fi, app support and GE's SmartHQ Software. The app is compatible with iOS and Android devices and allows you to control your refrigerator from any place across the globe. It also has a lot of customization options. It will also send you notifications when the door is left unlocked and when the fridge or freezer requires defrosting, and when the filter needs to be changed.

It does offer a countdown feature on the display of the fridge to display how much water you have left, but it's not as effective as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The Bosch French-door Refrigerator is a stunning piece of equipment. It's designed to appear like a seamless piece in your kitchen. This refrigerator was the highest-rated refrigerator in our Refrigerators Test for several reasons. Its freezer temperatures held firm at just a few degrees Fahrenheit, never changing by more than a fraction a degree--this is key to avoiding freezing burn. The fridge's refrigerator section also performed well, achieving the desired initial set temperature within an hour and maintaining that temperature steady over the course of our tests.

Bosch has a reputation for high-end appliances, so it's no surprise that this counter depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance, with the option of connecting to your home Wi-Fi network and Bosch's Home Connect platform. The app allows you to monitor and control your refrigerator remotely from your smartphone or tablet. The fridge is a bit expensive, however it has top-quality features and functions for the price.

It's important to understand the limitations of the fridge. It is possible to be inventive with tall items since the fridge has a limited shelf space. The shelves aren't impervious to spills and could easily be stained or damaged by sharp items. It's easy to remove the trays from the fridge however, you must keep them clean to avoid the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S is a great counter-depth refrigerator that packs plenty of storage space into the frame's compact size. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. The fridge features the standard French door design, and two rows of spill-capture shelving and a set crisper drawers. The top shelf on the right can be folded down to give tall items more headroom. There's also a full-width deli drawer and an internal water dispenser.

This refrigerator is equipped with an ice maker making it easy to transfer the ice when needed. The freezer features thoughtful design elements, too, like sliding drawers to help you better organize the position of your items. It also has a large bin that can accommodate plenty of frozen food items and an additional storage bin for ice.

Another great feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. You can control the temperature, lighting and other aspects of your fridge using your smartphone. It's a great way to monitor and manage your refrigerator, especially when you're away from home.

However, while the Smart InstaView is a neat feature, it doesn't improve the overall performance of the refrigerator. The refrigerator took longer to chill food and defrost it than the other fridges we tried. This could be due to its bigger capacity.

The doors are a different issue with this refrigerator. The sunken handles let shorter people open them from the bottom. However taller people will struggle to close them without slamming them. It would have been better if these had front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX fridge is a great choice for those looking to blend the look of a French door refrigerator with an efficient design. Its capacity is above average for a counter-depth model, and it cools well and has a nice layout. It's also a little less than the best counter depth refrigerator that comes with an icemaker, which makes it a great option.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

If you're looking for a French door refrigerator that won't break the bank and isn't expensive, this Frigidaire is a great choice. It's a basic design that's not as visually striking like some of the competitors but it does have enough features to make it a good option. Its most notable feature is the temperature adjustable drawer that helps keep food items like meat and vegetables fresher for longer. It also comes with a large water and ice maker dispenser.

Another great feature is the "Chill Drawer" that sits above the two crisper bins. The drawer lets you redirect some of your fridge's cooling power into this area, so that you can store foods that require extra attention. You can adjust the feature using the slider located on the on the outside of the drawer. It is also possible to use this to set a general cooling level for the entire fridge however, I've found that changing the general settings tends to have a better effect than specific ones.

In my tests, I found that the temperatures in the refrigerator were fairly consistent across different parts of the fridge. The temperatures in the top, bottom and middle of the refrigerator didn't vary much from 38 degrees. This is a great performance however it doesn't make it into the top ten in our rankings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. You can also connect this fridge to a smart thermometer for more precise readings of your fridge's temperature.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made of grey-bodied stainless that has a "smudge proof" finish. It does an excellent job of removing streaks and fingerprints, even compared to glossier stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tried.
