If your bifold doors are sticking it's likely they require some maintenance. It is possible that you need to clean or lubricate them, or even adjust them. The problem may be caused by loose screws on the top pivot or by the top roller guide.

Take the door off

Installing a set of internal bifold doors could seem like a complex and complicated project, but it's actually quite easy for DIYers with a bit of experience. The frame is not the problem, but getting the doors to fold and close smoothly is. Since bifold doors are complicated machines, they might require some 'tuning' to continue functioning properly. This might be something as easy as tightening a screw or as complex as removing the door and replacing the pivot pin or roller.

The majority of the time you can fix these issues with a few basic adjustments without removing the doors. You might notice that your bifold doors are sliding or scraping the floor, or jumping out of track. It's not difficult to fix these problems. Follow these three easy steps and your bifold door will be back in the right direction in short time.

The most common problem that bifolding doors with internal hinges face is the sliding out of alignment. This could be due loose screws, holes in the anchor/pivots or a misaligned bifold door. In the majority of instances, you can fix this issue with a few simple adjustments, but if the door isn't moving at all it may need to be removed and replaced.

You'll need to remove the door using an screwdriver, and perhaps a pair pliers to loosen any pivot pins that are too tight. The screwdriver is used to release any locking levers on the bottom pivot bracket and the pliers will let you wiggle the pin out and off.

When the top roller is free and the top roller is loose, you should be able to lift the door and swivel it downwards and allow you to pull it off its pivot brackets and track. This is usually quite straightforward however, be sure not to let the door hit against the door frame. You should then be able cut off the edge of the door which is scraping the floor and sand it down until smooth. You can then repaint it or replace it with a new finish as needed.

Remove the Roller Guide

This spring-loaded roller guide mounts on the top of the bifold door to assist with smooth operation. It is made specifically for Kenna frames and will fit door panels that range from 1 inch to 1-3/8 inches thick. It is made of steel, nylon, and plastic components. It is able to replace the damaged guide.

Remove any screws holding the roller guide in place with the screwdriver. Use your hands to carefully remove it from the frame. It may take some effort, so have someone else help you keep the door in place as you remove it.

After removing the old guide, carefully cut off the remaining finishing on the foot of the guide with a razor to separate it from the blank rod. This will make the guide's foot much easier to remove and will prevent any damage. The foot is extremely sharp, and it can cut or snag fingers.

You may have to use some force to remove the guide, but you must be careful not to break or chip the foot. After you've removed the guide from the rod blank, make sure to remove all of the threads and epoxy that remain in the place where it was attached. This will help prevent future problems with the guide.

After you have removed the previous guide, check the new one by placing it in its permanent position. Make a few turns using masking tape or guide tubing to hold it in position. This allows you to check the alignment of the guide and spacing to ensure everything is set up correctly. The final step is to replace the door. If the guide is in the proper position and is working in the correct way, then you're able to proceed. Be aware that any screws or pins that you loosened or removed should be replaced and tightened appropriately when you're done.

Take the Bottom Pivot off.

Bifold doors are a beautiful feature for any home, but sometimes they require some tweaking or adjustment to remain in top shape. While some of the more straightforward issues can be fixed with the doors still in place, other issues require removal. You'll also require an elongated squeeze-clamp as well as a small container Elmer's wood adhesive, which can be found in large box stores.
