Ignition Cylinder Lock Repair

The ignition cylinder lock is responsible for allowing the key to turn and start the vehicle. It operates through springs and chambers which can be damaged by environmental factors like low or high temperatures.

Take off the covers of the steering column.

Ignition lock-cylinders, or ignition lock-cylinders, are mechanical devices that allow a key to be inserted into the ignition switch to be turned to start a vehicle. They can wear out or malfunction in a variety of ways, such as the key being placed too hard or not in the correct position. They can also break down and fail due to corrosion or other reasons. If your ignition cylinder isn't working and isn't turning, it's time to replace it. This is a straightforward task however, you'll need to remove the steering column cover and airbag cover. The process is risky and challenging and the new engine may require specialized tools to put in.

The ignition cylinder can be found in the middle column where the steering wheel is attached. It has two screws on the bottom and an attachment clip on the side to secure it to the column. Remove these screws before you begin working on the cylinder to stop it from slipping out and becoming lost.

Once the screws are removed, you can take off the plastic retainers that are located at the bottom of the cover. A metal retainer clips into the top cover to keep it in place. You may have to pry off the cover in order to remove the tabs that are lower.

You can cut them off by removing the retaining screw and bending the tab outward. If the tab is broken completely it can be replaced by a piece of perforated metal strapping which is available at a majority of hardware stores. You'll require U-clips to secure the new "tab" at the bottom. These can be purchased at any automotive parts store.

Once the plastic tabs have been removed and the airbag cover pulled back, you will be able to access the cylinder hole in the ignition. Utilizing the 1/16-inch allen screw you can unlock the ignition lock and push on the cylinder retaining pin. You can then remove the cylinder. It may be necessary to replace it with an anti-theft cylinder.
