Three Wheeled Buggies

If you're looking for a buggy to run around in or a nifty stroller to tackle neighbourhood walks, three wheeled buggies offer great mobility. Their compact design makes it easy to maneuver even in tight spaces.

Sturdy frame

The latest figures have been released that show that the three-wheeled vehicle which was a symbol of the decade of more money than wisdom - is in steep decline. Four-wheelers have replaced them, which are more flexible and simple to drive and look stylish.

The bigger the wheels are, the better your buggy can deal with bumpy and uneven pavements. The larger wheels both rear and front, make it easier to maneuver and more stable while walking downhill or on difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tried the buggy out with a newborn baby and a 3 wheel stroller travel system-year-old child and found it to be extremely sturdy. It was able to withstand cobbles, grass and rough pavements as well as dirt tracks and kerbs. She said that it felt sturdy to push, and extremely solid on rough terrain. The tyres, that are inflatable and need to be pumped up regularly, have built-in suspension. This was very comfortable for my kids.

The size and shape of the seat is another thing to think about. You'll want it to be large enough to accommodate your child's comfort and you will also need it to recline so that they can lie flat. Some three-wheel buggies have a lie-flat option that lets your child face you, while other buggies only allow a parent-facing one.

The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road or wet walks. It can be used as a single unit from birth and then adapts to take two children when your family expands. It is suitable for infants and toddlers from birth until age 4 and includes a bumper, raincover, an improved 5-point harness, and a big cushioned seat. The storage options are excellent as well, with a large basket, zip pockets inside the hood and an attractive pouch at the rear of the seat unit.

Larger wheels

Larger wheels means that your buggy will be more stable on uneven terrain, which is ideal for buggies that are off-road. They also allow you to navigate the pushchair through tight spaces. Many three wheeled buggies have swivel front wheels to assist you in maneuvering around corners with ease, whereas others are specifically designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability at which they can be driven. This is also helpful if you bump into the roots of a tree or stray kerb as the front wheel will rise up to keep you from hitting it.

Many 3 wheeled pushchairs have air-filled tyres that allow them to handle a wide range of terrains. They are also more flexible than 4 wheelers. They are also lighter. However, they're susceptible to punctures and you'll need to keep a repair kit, spare inner tube and pump handy.

Some of our favourite 3 wheel push chair-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. Both of these buggies have larger wheels that, as per MFM reviewer Kath, "perform really well on grass, gravel tracks and market town cobbles" and are able to easily climb and descend kerbs. The buggies also have a suspension that Kath says "smooths out bumps very effectively".

The downside of having larger wheels is that they make some buggies quite broad and may struggle to squeeze through narrow spaces. This is a problem especially if you're using it to an exercise bike or to maneuver through doorways that are narrow when you're out and out and about. Fortunately, many models come with small folding options that allow you to take off the front wheels for more compact storage.

Easy to Manoeuvre

One of the main benefits to a three-wheeled buggy is that it can be much easier to maneuver especially with a child in the back. The way they are built means that the front wheels spin on a dime and are extremely easy to maneuver and are ideal for tricky terrain such as parks, cobbles or bumpy pavements, as well as dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tried out a three-wheeler with her toddler and newborn and stated: "The Terrain was a pleasure to maneuver over tough ground, with the swivel front 3 wheel all terrain buggy particularly useful. I was also awed by how well it handled kerbs with the hand-operated break. I found it to be extremely steady when I was driving downhill or on uneven ground."

The only drawback to this great maneuverability, is that the larger wheels of a 3 wheel pushchair travel system-wheel buggy may make it difficult to fit into tight spaces. This is something you should keep in mind when you live in a city. If this is an issue then a four-wheeled buggy might be the better choice for you.
